Learn all about the Shrek characters!

Once upon a time in Far Far Away lived a jolly green Ogre called Shrek... This blog is your ultimate guide to the colourful cast of characters that make the Shrek universe so memorable.
Beginning with the one and only, Shrek himself!
Shrek
Shrek was born around 30 years before he rescued Princess Fiona! Before meeting Donkey he lived quite a lonely life - keeping himself to himself due to people's fear of him.
This soon changed after marrying Princess Fiona where he slowly began to open up to others.
He slowly embarks on a journey of self-discovery that teaches him all about fatherhood, love, friendship and acceptance.
His story challenges traditional notions of beauty and heroism, showing that true love and friendship come in all shapes and sizes.
Fiona
Fiona is a strong, independent princess who got turned into an ogre overnight, due to a curse that can only be broken by a true love's kiss. Until this happens, she is locked away in a dragon-guarded castle awaiting her rescue.
She is the Princess of Far Far Away and the daughter of King Harold and Queen Lillian. Unlike your typical princess, Fiona's character has depth, growth and complexity and it quickly becomes clear that she is not your typical damsel in distress.
During her love story with Shrek, they connect over shared experiences including both feeling like outsiders, but Shrek's acceptance of her ogre form allows her to embrace her new self.
Donkey
Donkey is known as Shrek's sidekick and best friend. He's a hyperactive chatterbox who brings humour to the series with his wit and hilarious one-liners.
Things take an unexpected turn when he falls in love with a Dragon, the same Dragon that initially tried to eat him. However, their relationship grows into something beautiful and their union leads to the birth of the "Dronkeys", their lovable half-donkey, half-dragon babies.
In comparison to Shrek, Donkey easily adjusts to fatherhood and was very well prepared to raise his chaotic, energetic kids.
Puss in Boots
Puss in Boots is a smooth talking Spanish cat, who is also an honourable fighter - he likes to sing, dance and generally have a good time, he's always on the look out for an adventure.
In Shrek 2 he was hired by King Harold to take down Shrek - however in a twist of events Puss in Boots ends up joining Donkey and Shrek.
One of his most famous traits are his "big eyes" - he widens his eyes to look as innocent and cute as possible to distract potential enemies. It's both comically effective and charming.
Prince Charming
Prince Charming is the son of the Fairy Godmother and is depicted as a strong-willed, character who is more concerned with his image and status rather than genuine love.
He attempts to rescue Princess Fiona from her tower, only to find that she has already been rescued and married to Shrek. Frustrated by the interference in his plan to become king by marrying Fiona, he plots with his mother, the Fairy Godmother, to separate Shrek and Fiona.

Meet Prince CharmingLord Farquaad
Lord Farquaad is the main antagonist of the original Shrek movie and really depicts the "quintessential villain" character well. He's the ruler of Duloc, a kingdom obsessively groomed to mirror his desires for order and perfection. His character is a striking and humorous parody of the authoritarian ruler often seen in traditional fairy tales.
In his pursuit for perfection, he often evicted people if they didn't fit into his idea of a "perfect world". This quest for perfection is mirrored in his personal quest to become a true king by marrying a princess and at one point he tries to pursue Princess Fiona however, this plan is interrupted by Shrek and Donkey.
Fairy Godmother
The Fairy Godmother is introduced in Shrek 2.
Her power extends beyond her magical abilities. She appears to have a lot of influence in Far Far Away and this is seen in her connections with the kingdom’s elite, including King Harold, whom she blackmails to ensure her son, Prince Charming, marries Princess Fiona.
As Prince Charming’s mother, the Fairy Godmother is intent on securing a perfect life for her son, which includes marrying Fiona and becoming the king of Far Far Away, as a result, she has no problems trying to ruin Shrek and Fiona's marriage.
Ultimately, the Fairy Godmother’s downfall comes through her own overconfidence and the resilience of Shrek and his friends.
